Romans 5:1-11

KING JAMES:
Rom 5:1  Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
Rom 5:2  By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Rom 5:3  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
Rom 5:4  And patience, experience; and experience, hope
Rom 5:5  And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
Rom 5:6  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
Rom 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Rom 5:10  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Rom 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement

Main Points: Despite tribulations, we rejoice in God and His extended grace. We know (now) that he sought to justify us through faith, even though we were still sinners. This great love was exhibited in the death of Jesus. Much more now in His LIFE will we find the glory of God, a Father who loves us absolutely, completely and willingly.

1.    Write down all we have because we have been justified. Explain these blessings. (1-4 Only) Peace through Jesus: Access to stand in God’s grace through our faith: We rejoice in hope of the glory of God: We rejoice in our sufferings: Endurance: Character: Hope:
See notes below for verses 9-10 Justified-Saved-Reconciled
2.    Explain verse 5. How has God’s love been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit? One must understand the purpose(s) of the Holy Spirit first– 1) Bring the word to remembrance Jn 14:25-26, 2)Bear Witness Jn 15:26, 3)Convict the world Jn 16:7-8, 4)Guide into all truth, glorify Christ Jn 16:12-14, 15) 6)Comforter Acts 9:31.
Then understand what the Holy Spirit did – Acts 2-He brought mankind into an understanding of the mission of Jesus….reconciling mankind back to God almighty. In Acts 1 they knew nothing, in Acts 2 they were preaching….they knew everything (relative). The Holy Spirit FINISHED the work of Jesus by making it understandable within the context of a plan of God from the beginning. This is action by God to reclaim mankind as His children. If that does not touch the heart…..well…I have to assume the heart must be calloused.
3.    Write down all the descriptions of what we were in relationship to God.

4.    Explain Paul’s point in verse 10.  It is difficult if not impossible to separate verses 9-11 as it is one linear thought. 10 Appears to appeal to reason: If God exhibits his power to reconcile us BACK TO HIM through the death of Jesus, imagine the power (of salvation) we will find in the Life of Jesus (who defeated death and lives). Through this reconciliation (10) which is a mutual effort, God’s first and ours second….we are truly reconciled as only God can afford (11) which is a restoration to His favor…..i.e. He makes us His children. This power that God has afforded to us, and it’s blessing, is what produces the joy Paul speaks of. These verses expound o Paul’s assertion that God is loving on us!
